Bindubasini Government Boys’ High School, Tangail
Bindubasini Government Boys’ High School, located in Tangail, Bangladesh, is one of the country's oldest and most esteemed educational institutions. Established on April 3, 1880, the school began as a minor school in the East Adalatpara neighborhood of Tangail. Shortly after its inception, it was upgraded to a high school and named Graham English High School in honor of Harold Graham, the then Deputy Magistrate of Mymensingh.
Facing financial challenges in its early years, the school received crucial support from Nawab Bahadur Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury, the Zamindar of Dhanbari, who funded its operations for about two years. Subsequently, Rani Bindubasini Roy Chowdhurany, the consort of Zamindar Dwarkanath Roy Chowdhury of Santosh, took over the school's patronage. In recognition of her significant contributions, the institution was renamed Bindubasini High School.
Under Rani Bindubasini's stewardship, the school flourished. In 1886, 20 students appeared for the entrance examination, with 14 passing in the first division and 6 in the second division—a remarkable achievement at the time. In 1910, she established a trust to ensure the school's sustainability. Her sons, Pramathanath Roy Chowdhury and Sir Manmathanath Roy Chowdhury, continued her legacy by donating land and establishing facilities such as buildings, laboratories, and a library.
The school was nationalized on February 1, 1970, and began operating as a double-shift institution in 1991 to accommodate the growing number of students. In 1996, it was recognized as the Best High School in Bangladesh, highlighting its commitment to academic excellence.
Beyond academics, the school has played a role in the nation's history. On March 11, 1971, Mawlana Bhashani, a prominent political leader, held a mass rally on the school's premises, expressing support for the freedom fighters during Bangladesh's liberation movement.
Over the decades, Bindubasini Government Boys’ High School has evolved not only as a center of academic excellence but also as a hub for co-curricular and extracurricular development. The institution has produced numerous notable alumni who have gone on to make significant contributions in various fields, including education, government, medicine, literature, and the arts. Their achievements continue to bring pride and recognition to the school both nationally and internationally.
The school maintains a strong emphasis on discipline, moral values, and civic responsibility. Regular cultural programs, science fairs, debates, sports tournaments, and scouting activities form an integral part of campus life, aiming to develop well-rounded individuals. Students of the school have consistently excelled in public examinations and have earned prestigious scholarships and awards over the years.
Bindubasini Government Boys’ High School also places great importance on preserving its historical heritage while embracing technological advancement. In recent years, it has integrated digital classrooms, improved library resources, and established computer labs to keep pace with the changing educational landscape. Its dedicated teaching staff and proactive administration continue to ensure a dynamic and inclusive learning environment.
The school's alumni association, made up of thousands of former students spread across the globe, plays an active role in the school's development. Alumni frequently return to share their experiences, conduct workshops, offer mentorship, and support infrastructure projects. These connections help current students gain inspiration and guidance, creating a strong bond between past and present generations of learners.
